30. Let’s make ten
Lesson Video: ___ and ___ make Ten
Skills Practice:
Match up all of the tens partners.
Written Practice:
Download & Print ‘Make Ten’ Worksheets OR if you have theĀ printed workbook, complete pages 84 – 87.
Enrichment Activities:
- Print and play the ten frame games located in the materials sections. The file includes several games. You may use one of them or all of them, it’s up to you. Feel free to keep playing them even after completing the lessons about “tens partners” as they will continue to increase your child’s understanding.
- Use two colors of beads and string them on pipe cleaners to “make ten”. Alternatively, use yarn and two colors of fruit loops, or yarn and two types of macaroni, or whatever materials you have on hand.
- Use two colors of tiddly winks, poker chips, counting bears, m&m’s or even two types of dried beans (or whatever you have around your home) to create groups of “tens partners”. For example, 3 red poker chips plus 7 blue poker chips are tens partners. You may group them on a table top, or use a ten frame (printable ten frames are located under the materials tab) to arrange them so they are easier to see at a glance.
Math Conversations:
You will need a small back of m&m’s and a handful of pennies to use as manipulatives for this math conversation. Use the m&m’s and pennies to act out each of the following word problems.
Daily math conversations in your home are essential for building number sense and instilling a love of math. They will help your child realize the application of math to daily life and understand how essential it is. Ten is the foundation of our number system. As we work on tens partners over the next few weeks, the games you will play with your child and the conversations you will have together will give your child a thorough understanding of the number ten
Objectives: Become familiar with tens partners, which are the sets of two numbers that combine to make ten (1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5). Learn to “see” ten (subitize) as well as decompose it.
