Enrichment Activities:
- Fact Family Flashcards & Games. All of the addition and subtraction facts up through the tens are included. These flashcards are unique in that each card contains all three members of a fact family, which will help your child thoroughly understand and memorize all of the fact families using the part/part/whole model, instead of just memorizing individual facts. This will increase number sense and make future math concepts easier to understand. The instructions to play the games are included with the printable.
- Fact Families Card Game. You need some linking cubes, legos, counting bears or some small, identical manipulative (legumes, pennies, anything will work). Cut apart the fact family houses worksheet your child completed today into individual “families” (houses). Stack them like playing cards, upside down on the table. Flip the top card over and create the family on the card, using the manipulatives. For example, for the card 3/2/5 you will count out two blocks, then three blocks, then you’ll combine them and count five blocks. Try to get through the entire stack of cards.
- Fact Family Cup Game. Use the same manipulatives used above, a plastic cup and a single, 10-sided die or 12-sided die. Roll the die and count out that many blocks (or whatever you are using). Shake the blocks in the cup, spill them onto the table and quickly cover several of them without counting. Use the number on the die (the WHOLE) and count the uncovered blocks (one PART) to deduce the number of blocks (the other PART) covered by the cup. You and your child could take turns. Be sure to use the terms WHOLE and PART over and over to cement that idea in your child’s head.
